seriously, brunch is underrated. the dinner party has been in the spotlight for much too long now, folks, and now i do believe it’s time for brunch to reclaim its time in the sun. we had some friends over for a yummy new years brunch on sunday (kids and all!) and it was so fun…and, yes, homemade was the name of the game:
1) barefoot contessa sour cream coffee cake (i know, i know, i’m obsessed)
2) my mama’s egg casserole with cheese, sausage and green chiles
3) real french bread french toast with real whipped cream and strawberries for the kids
4) best of all….grapefruit margaritas for the grown-ups…this is one of those recipes i tore out of an age-old sunset magazine and never got around to making, but boy were they delicious…and so easy! so here you go:
in a pitcher (at least 2-qt. capacity), combine 3 cups ruby grapefruit juice (fresh-squeezed or purchased), 2 cups tequila, and 1 cup triple sec or other orange-flavored liqueur. Chill until cold, at least 1 hour, or up to 1 day. Pour about 1/4 cup sugar on a rimmed plate. Cut a ruby grapefruit in half and rub rims of double old-fashioned glasses (8 oz.) with cut side of one half to moisten, then dip glass rims in sugar to coat. Fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour grapefruit margaritas over ice, taking care not to disturb sugared glass rims.
we honestly didn’t need lunch after all that, so for dinner my adorable husband made chicken thighs and cooked carrots…yum.
packing the boys’ lunchboxes was definitely challenging. i gave them each a banana, an apple, a baggie of the homemade granola bars i made, and a honey sandwich on a biscuit…hopefully the breadmaker will arrive soon so we can have real bread for sandwiches soon…
in other news, i’m racking my brain trying to think of something handmade for my husband’s birthday coming up…we have more than enough artwork (lord knows)…and he really isn’t the personalized stationery type..any thoughts? i need inspiration…
